Phil Murphy Band
For many artists, the summer festival circuit is a goal to reach, performing on a bill that includes the likes of BON JOVI and NO DOUBT. For Harrisburg, PA's DIGITAL ELVIS it seemed like a good place to get started - playing for about 800,000 of their closest friends. DIGITAL ELVIS' debut EP - Sounds From the Orange Forest. With Sounds, the band delivers a diverse collection of tunes that showcase both their seeming grab-bag of influences, including STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, ROY ORBISON, THE KILLERS and JOHNNY CASH, as well as their penchant for adventurous songwriting.

Up The Chain

Reed Kendall has been recording his original music since well before his voice changed. In May of 2009, Up the Chain played to a packed house at MilkBoy Coffee in Ardmore, PA. The best 14 songs were compiled and turned into the band's first full-length release, "Live @ MilkBoy" (September, 2009). On the record, Up the Chain take the substantive pop sensibility of Reed Kendall's songwriting and infuse it with hints of jazz and jam. Reed is influenced most by the poetic imagery of Conor Oberst, the live performance of Dave Matthews and the songwriting of Jack Johnson. Performed live, the songs take on a life of their own, giving way to soaring solos but never outstaying their welcome. The record features some of Philly's most well-known players: Chuck Treece (drums), Avery Coffee (electric guitar), Chris Aschman (trumpet), Anam Owili-Eger (keyboard), and Phil D'Agostino (bass).

Chris Kasper

Birdie Busch

Saturday
February 6

Chris Kasper
Chris Kasper incorporates a vast array of influences in one original sound that appeals to rockers, folkies, hillbillies, and everyone in between.

"Chris Kasper knocks me out with the quality of his themes, his lyrics and memorable melodies. Chris is a heavy hitter and his new album is proves it." - Gene Shay/ WXPN,Philadelphia

Birdie Busch
The music of birdie busch is the concise sound of a well defined personality unfiltered by the social trends or factors that often define what people are or aren’t listening to. writing in deceptively simple terms, she reveals very complex and nuanced emotions and complicated narratives with stark phrases and novel turns of speech. Comparing it seems like an odd thing to do, and many often find themselves searching for a reference point, but critics from the village voice to american songwriter have admiringly found her of kindred spirit to everyone from syd barrett to eudora welty. She has shared stages with a variety of artists such as Richie Havens, Chris Smither, and Regina Spektor.

Cancelled due to weather.
Red Rooster

Sunday
February 7

Still based in New York City, the band has steadily built its audience and critical recognition, culminating in a slot at 2008’s Newport Folk Festival. Its previous double album Dose, released to critical acclaim, reached on the XM Radio Americana chart. The band will release its third album, “WALK,” in the fall of 2009. Their most mature work musically and lyrically, the album is infused with the musical tension between the traditional and the modern. The songs are deeply personal meditations on transitions, from the birth of a child to failed marriage and the draw of a simpler, more rural existence “off the grid.”

At the band's request, we are going to cancel and re-schedule.

Brian Severn
& Those Victorious

Shutters

Thursday
February 11

Brian Severn & Those Victorious
Hailing from Frederick, Maryland, Brian Severn & Those Victorious are quickly proving to be tenacious self starters. Writing and performing highly melodic compositions with emotionally intelligent lyrics and big catchy hooks, it’s evident that their inspiration comes from within. The band which began as a solo acoustic project featuring Brian Severn has grown into a solid song-oriented powerhouse.

Their second EP entitled “Wonderboy”, officially released in February 2008, is now available online at their website, Best Buy, and digitally on iTunes. The band has begun touring extensively in support of their new release and is heading back into the studio in mid 2009 to record a new single with the assistance of producer David Ivory.

Shutters
Shutters began in 2007 as a vehicle for the original music of Emmett Lindsay, a Philadelphia based singer-songwriter.

Evolving as a rhythm-driven band, Shutters animates the broad mosaic of melodies and lyrics that Lindsay assembles. Rooted in contemporary rock, their varied harmonies allude to jazz and classical influences. All band members collaborate on arrangements.

As lead singer, Lindsay takes the reins on either guitar or piano with vocal support from sister and cellist Chloe Gallagher and bassist Dan Manchester. This smart musical trio comes to life behind the lithe energy of drummer Ben Brown, with each member involved in the inclusion of live electronics.

Idlewheel

Wissahickon Chicken Shack

Saturday
February 13

Idlewheel
IDLEWHEEL is the brainchild of Poco bassist/vocalist Jack Sundrud and Nashville songwriting veteran Craig Bickhardt. Together they create music equally informed by mainstream and alternative country, Triple A and Americana music. Their lyrics and harmonies are tempered with bluegrass, Country, folk and a dash of Southern California Country-Rock.

Craig Bickhardt and Jack Sundrud do it all with a wry nonchalance that belies their uncommon craftsmanship...these guys know the high road of country-rock better than most. Their credits are solid and sterling - Bickhardt was a member of renowned Nashville group SKB, while Sundrud enjoyed success with Great Plains and (most recently) Poco. But really, Idlewheel isn’t a spin-off (no pun intended) of these bands. It's more the product of afternoons spent swapping stories and woodshedding songs, of testing each others creative limits in defiance of Nashville’s prevailing conservatism.

A professional television and stage actress, Cary brings more than great music to the stage. She creates an intimate theatrical experience that brings her audience along on a rewarding emotional ride. "You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll beg for more!" (News and Observer).

Wissahickon Chicken Shack
A progressive seven-piece roots collective, the Wissahickon Chicken Shack rocks keys and drums (progressive, right?) while plucking and sliding across five sets of acoustic strings that conspire to crack the cocoons of your most tired of huddled masses, pull out the inner honky-tonk heroes within us all and charm ‘em into swaggering out, calming down and taking it all in stride.

It’s the goodtime, hip-shaking equivalent to buying you a frosty beer and fat slice of hummingbird cake. The heart wonders: why isn’t life always this much fun?

Her last CD reached #1 on two indie charts, #4 on the college charts, and was selected to be part of the Starbucks download kiosk program. Big Blue Spruce

Stolen Rhodes

Friday
March 19

Big Blue Spruce
Big Blue Spruce plays vintage rock and roll, both mellow and raunchy. Their recordings feature a tight, smooth groove with floating harmonies, while their live show is an energetic, loose and raucous experience that allows for a free interpretation of the music. Big Blue Spruce is a power trio with a lead guitar, a lead bass, and a lead drummer. With songs about wandering, wondering, and discovering, they take simple concepts and song structures and twist them just far enough off-course to find their own path. Somewhat psychedelic, somewhat southern rock, and somewhat all their own, Big Blue Spruce continues to work in the studio after the 2009 release of the SEEDS EP while playing shows and spreading the word to anyone that will listen.

Stolen Rhodes

Classic rock meets modern sounds, Bruce Springsteen meets Dave Matthews. However you describe it, Delaware Valley band Stolen Rhodes makes music to please almost any crowd. At every show you are guaranteed to see a unique performance by talented musicians playing real instruments, making real music.

Since the band kicked off the release of their EP “From The Dark Side of 88” in May of 2009 at Surf Taco in Jackson, N.J, they haven't looked back.

Fans describe band members Kevin Cunningham, Matt Pillion, Dan Haase, and Ian Petri as, “the hardest working band in the tri state area.” because the band plays several times a week, all without the help of a label or booking agency. Stolen Rhodes is currently working on their debut album, but in the mean time they are winning fans over weekly wherever they play.

Run To Sandy

Friday
March 26

JD Malone
Run To Sandy was formed from the smoldering ashes of several post-punk, neo-corporate professional existences (day jobs), rising like a Phoenix over the hearts and minds of a people so desperate for contact. This music brushed their faces like an elegiac symphony --- a combustion of convention that settled like snow on a flat, heartland field. Each member faithfully reproduces the chiming of their true selves with each and every performance, spawning a new offspring with the same DNA, but a face completely their own.

Lili Anel

Saturday
March 27

Laura Cheadle
Not just a thoughtful singer-songwriter, and not just a soulful funk diva, musician Laura Cheadle offers audiences a lively performance filled with upbeat introspection. This New Jersey native, who has recently completed her second independently released studio album entitled Live On, has opened for The Jonas Brothers, Sister Hazel, Spin Doctors, and Constantine Maraoulis of American Idol. Cheadle was featured on 6 ABC's "TUNED IN" segment as their very first Viewer's Choice where she and her music were profiled.

Lili Anel
Take the soulfulness of Bill Withers, the power and range of Anita Baker, the elegance of Sade, the rhythmic sense of Richie Havens, the songwriting of Carly Simon or Joni Mitchell and roll it all together and you might get an idea of what Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Lili Anel is all about. Whether she’s performing solo or with a rhythm section, Lili Añel’s songs captivate her audience. A transplanted New Yorker, Lili considers herself a Philadelphian and with good reason; venues like Tin Angel and World Café Live! have embraced her; WXPN has featured her.

Defying categorization and calling her music a hybrid of “urban/acoustic/jazz/pop” combined with a powerfully unique vocal style bringing her to the forefront. Lili continues to win over audiences with her vocal stylings, guitar playing and songs, that while often recalling her many influences (Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Janis Ian). Lili’s recent CD, “Every Second In Between”, produced by Grammy award winning producer, Glenn Barratt, continues to bring Lili wide acclaim, making the All About Jazz 2009 Year End Writers Choice for the 10 Best New Jazz Releases list, CityPaper’s 2009 Music Critic’s List, along with JazzTimes Magazine proclaiming ““…a cd to blow your mind at first listen…”.
